ZMS PRESENTS: National Park Suite by Ryan Fraley

In 2021, ZMS music teachers Chris & Ashley Murray received grants through the Lilly Endowment's Teacher Creativity Fellowship program.

The goals of the grant project were to explore Acadia, Olympic, Everglades, and Big Bend National Parks, document experiences by journaling and by taking thousands of photographs and videos, and to provide all of these experiences and media to composer Ryan Fraley, who would then use them as inspiration in writing a new and original four-movement work for ZMS's 8th grade band and orchestra students.

This is the world premiere of Mr. Fraley's resulting composition, which consists of four movements. Each movement was written to resemble the landscapes and wildlife of the four visited national parks. Photos and videos taken from each park will be shown on projection screens during the performance.

At the performance, the ZMS 8th grade orchestra and 8th grade band will each perform all four movements in their entirety, and Mr. Murray, Mrs. Murray, Mr. Fraley, and some students may share more information about their experiences throughout the project.

All proceeds from ticket sales and donations from this performance will go toward hiring and recording professional musicians, so that bands and orchestras all over the world can hear this work and purchase it for their own programs once it is published.
